"The human instinct for growth, development, expansion coming from the person, the tribe, the nation, leads the one body of humanity to fatal antagonisms: a sometimes pleasant and sometimes tragic self-consumption. The fact that made this instinct necessary in order for the weak humans to survive through centuries in an enemy, dangerous environment does not any longer exist. Humanity has been for long now ruling the earth and therefor has to re-evaluate its mentality, its behaviors and its goals. It is emergency to reinvent the reasons of our existence in order to protect ourselves from ourselves."

Kostas Beveratos in order to describe this concept invites Ira Spagadorou (Visual Artist) to present her project "In The Name Of The Merciful God". The two artists created plenty of easy-to-make over-cloths made out of white paper with drawn lines that separate the body parts -the same way that we see a sketch of the cow's parts at a butcher's store. A celebration with people drinking wine and chatting, while all wearing the over-clothes, takes place at the ER at exactly 12:30 at noon.

At the same time a music performance takes place with Marianthi Sontaki reading parts of stock market news of the day and parts of recipes for lamp cooking found in today's newspaper, while at the same time Yiannis Skoulidas (alto saxophone), Giorgos Stathakis (accordion) and Kostas Beveratos (drums) performed Emergency Music sounding like an alert.

In conclusion, the artist continues to develop the "Kill Faith, Not Humanity" concept (ER 20070921, ER 20070915). Humanity has to re-invent the messages that gods carry to it. "God's Latest Will" appears to be a new testament in which God crosses out his last one "Grow and cultivate".

"Money under the table is a common practice for public servants in Greece. Even at the national health system. Poor people are forced to spend huge amounts of money in order to receive basic services. It is emergency to stop such practices and gain self respect as a society."

The artist presents a video, posted on the internet the day before, where a physician confesses:
"I'm really ashamed about what's happening. I'd rather stay anomynous though. Plain people come in. Poor people, retired, wage earners. And my colleague physicians treat them as an additional source of income. I'm sorry and ashamed on their account. This is inconceivable to me. It's not a matter of politics, or ideologies or of something similar to these. It's a matter of personal dignity. We are an undignified society. The only thing I can call this is being vulgar. Vulgarity. Those who claim that it's the fault of the statesmen are just hypocrits. It's the fault of each and one of us, of our own individual vulgarity. To put it simply, this is precisely what determines politics. I very much feel vulgar myself, as they are; even though I'm not part of the same scheme. But I don't do something about it either. I'd like to walk around wearing a pin that would state: “I don't suck money in”. But I'm scared. I'm scared they would lynch me."

"Mass media daily present war as an expected, inevitable human activity. War though is murder in mass scale. This encountering simply proves that humanity is still in the middle of its savage stage of evolution and doesn't seem, for now, to have the mental ability to evolve further on."

On page two of this triptych appear four pages of a past issue of the Colors magazine covered though with a sheet of paper since not all can stand the shock of the pictures presented.
On page three Natali Adrine Karayan presents two texts. One of her own and one by Marguerite Youncenar:

Yesterday I received two e-mails. The one was coming from www.kounia.org, an organization representing people that are being born in Greece and the authorities don't provide them with any kind of papers so it's like they don't exist either in this country or in any other place in the world.
The other, was coming from the 1st Athens Biennial announcing an art event related to the 8.855 refugees which have been killed while trying to enter the EU.

Natali Adrine Karayan proposed the idea of connecting the refugee buildings -built in 1935 on Alexandra's Ave. for the purpose of housing Asia Minor refugees- to the gallery through a thread. An action that seeks to bring the refugee buildings to the Emergency Room by using a simple hand-made children's toy (a thread and a plastic or metal pot on each side that transfers sound from one side to the other). A connection for memory-recall at a city of refugees and immigrants.

"A symbolic action. A symbolic act. A symbol. Is a symbol a monument? Does a monument become a symbol?
A symbolic monument or a monumental symbol?"

Today is the "Day Without Car" and I rode my bike all the way to the gallery.

"Riding a bicycle in Athens or even being a pedestrian is a terrible experience. On the way I couldn't avoid to breath thick polluted air and car drivers would show me in any way the disturbance I was causing to them. I will abandon my bike at the gallery and use the not-convinient-at-all public transportation to go back home."

"In this city there is no space left to pedestrians, it is dangerous to ride a bicycle and disabled people live imprisoned inside their houses. Day without cars is a joke."

On the first page of the newspaper Kathimerini (20070920) the prime minister appears to be making an oath in the name of the christian-orthodox religion's God.

"What does this ritual in which the government and the prime minister participate means? Are these medieval figures actually needed in order to verify my vote? Are these persons whom I voted responsible for their decisions and actions or they transfer the responsibility to god's will? Do I have to believe in this god?"

The question that the human need for belief creates to the artist appears here once more (ER 20070915).
On the triptych he brought to ER, on page one he places the newspaper's photograph as found.
On page two he makes the statement: "The day that we will no longer need to devote oaths to gods, we might then feel responsible for our actions".
On page three he presents Caravaggio's painting The sacrifice of Isaac (Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence) along with the statement "Kill Faith Not Humanity". This statement appears to be the message that the angel delivers to Abraham as "God's latest Will". This way the artist suggests that humanity should look for new messages coming from its gods. He proposes an evolution of the human kind by choice more than by need, that could lead humanity to a future without antagonism, human arrogance and terror.

"Discourse; Discours; Λόγος.

What words are spoken?
Do we become the words?
Or the words become 'we'?"

The new government is set. Voters did their duty and now the greek parliament and the five parties are ready to start the sessions.
Business as usual. Total emergency.

Kostas Beveratos and Natali Adrine Karayan (Social Scientist) formed five "faceless" masks made out of plaster and paper.
Each mask appears to have only mouth from where a specific material for each seems to be extracted in a violent, non-natural way. Five statues imprisoned-tight to their cause, unable to communicate or interact.

An A3 print is placed on the floor infront of the "statues" presenting a dialogue from Plato's Politeia. The dialogue appears cut off from its original meaning: "So, do you remember at the last selection for leaders, what kind of people we selected? Of course I do, said he".

The nationalistic party of LA.O.S. (Popular Orthodox Alert) entered for the first time the greek parliament after the national elections of the 16th of September.
"The belief of a person that the nation he belongs to is superior to all other nations is instinctive and primitive. However, it occupies a lot of space in the mythology (meaning historical collective consciousness), more or less, of all nations."

Kostas Beveratos invited people of all nations to participate The Glorious March of Superiority. Each one shall shout loud that his nation is superior to the others.
The music for this march was performed by Pantelis Paschaldis (trompet), Giorgos Stathakis (accordion) and Kostas Beveratos (snare drum).
The event had an unexpected outcome.

The artist Kali Katsouri was motivated by Kostas Beveratos's call for collaboration and created a related project. She hanged little "flags" of white paper by a string on the wall and invited everyone to consider it as his personal non-national flag and comment on it. Pencils were also hunging from the string.

Kali Katsouri coments:
"...I believe that we should start feeling human than anything less, and the bad aspects of today's nationalism are against humanism. We don't really need flags to show who we are or what we stand for, but we will always need to share our thoughts."

Inspired by the political parties' campaigns and especially by last evening's speech that the prime minister gave to a grand mass of supporters, Kostas Beveratos created a complex project.

"Viewing the mass of supporters-believers on TV, while listening to the prime minister's speech I got the sense of a great danger right outside my door. If a government which for four years appeared to be unable to handle the most simple problems, while failing to inspire the society on any topic, gains such support from the society, there is definitely a serious problem originated to human nature. And this can be described in three words: Need for Faith."

The artist presents on video a "waving" mass of people taken from the governing party's web site. He has saturated the colors so that the waving mass becomes an abstract body of one.

Then he posts on the wall four A3 pages.
On page one he presents a renaissance painting by Beato Angelico (Annunciation, Santa Maria delle Grazie, San Giovanni Valdarno), along with the statement "Kill Faith Not Humanity".
This statement appears to be the message that the angel delivers to Maria as "God's latest Will".
This way the artist suggests that humanity should look for new messages coming from its gods.
"Humanity has to face a new necessity. Either choose faith and commit suicide or choose the way to self consciousness and survive."
On pages number two and three he places two photos taken from the video.
On page four he presents the entire prime minister's speech.

"My father wanted me to run the family market. I chose to become a politician. It was proved that my choice was the right one.
Being a politician is much more profitable than running a family business. Besides it is always possible to turn it to a family business as well some day."

Thirty years ago since yesterday, Bantu Stephen Biko was murdered by the South African authorities while being imprisoned under the Terrorism Act law.

Kostas Beveratos creates his daily art journal dedicated to Bantu Stephen Biko who is today's "Terrorist of the Day" (ER 20070911, ER 20070906, ER 20070904).
This journal is consisted by three parts.

Development is proposed by the media as the only way to achieve prosperity.
A daily brain wash.
Two days ago I spent my day at this magical beach I present below.
Two years ago, in order to reach it, one should walk down the river canyon on a little path 150 meters long.
Since last year a dirt road leads all kind of visitors, along with their trash and human arrogance, right to the sand.
Jeeps don't hesitate to drive all the way to the water.
This summer the first constructions appeared on the sides of the river that leads to the sea.

"Development is an obsession.
Development brings construction.
Construction brings commerce.
Commerce brings taxes.
Taxes benefit development supporters.
We are dangerous to ourselves."

The greek society is systematically lead towards the medieval ages by the relation of the state with the orthodox church.

This evening the prime minister will give his speech at the International Exhibition of Thessaloniki.
It is a tradition that major protests take place at the perimeter of the exhibition.
Even more now that we are only eight days away from the national elections.

"LOUD PROTEST
MAKES NO SENSE
ONLY GOOD FOR MY NERVΕS
However, it appears to be necessary when oppression exceeds tolerable levels strangling opinions and interests.
A healthy democratic society that teaches responsibility to all parts has no need for loud protesting.
A dangerous sick society can not avoid it.
Loud protest wastes important and useful energy which a clever society would use otherwise and elsewhere."

He prints on it a b&w photo of a TV screen on which appears the debate set up and his comment underneath.

"SECURE THE PUBLIC SPACE
MONEY IS NO VALUE
Politicians respond to their duties like accountants of a grocery store, counting coins to the one or the other side.
What they show to us, is that to be a politician is a profession like any other. The goal of this profession is by any means to gain the most possible power. Just like in a video game.
Human communities though, need values of co-existence and a secure public space in which individuals can function. And these are needed more than any idol of power and richness."

The debate between the political leaders is scheduled for this evening and since several days occupies lots of time and space in public media.
The artist uses last day's newspapers to form a dark space on which he places three boxes, each one representing a basic color of the white light spectrum.

"Red, green and blue is what we know as the visible spectrum of light. Τhe three together compose the white light. If we had to live in a box lit only by one of the three we would then live in a paradox world.
During todays debate on TV the politicians will attempt to convince us that the little box they represent stands for the world that we should choose to live in. However, THERE IS NO VISION FROM THE INSIDE OF A BOX which means that any box is a dangerous world to live in.
This maybe doesn’t disturb a politician since he has no reason to worry about visions. To be a politician is just another profession. In any case, Ι have to look elsewhere for a vision and for white light."
"Kόκκινο, πράσινο και μπλε είναι αυτό που γνωρίζουμε ως ορατό φάσμα του φωτός. Τοποθετώντας και τα τρία μαζί συνθέτουμε το λευκό φως. Εάν έπρεπε να ζήσουμε σε ένα κουτί φωτισμένο μόνο από ένα από τα τρία, τότε θα ζούσαμε σε έναν παράδοξο κόσμο.

Οn the newspaper "Eleftherotypia" of September 4th there was an article about the statement made by the archbishop Christodoulos in which he adds to the "policy of fear" imposed by members of the greek government.

This "policy of fear' suggests that the enormous disaster that burnt a great amount of the greek forests, many people's belongings and many people themselves, was a product of dark powers, enemies of the greek people which want to harm the greek nation acting through an organized plan in order to succeed their goals.
This suggestion brings responsibilities for this disaster away from the government and the society, at a time right before the national elections.
The archbishop Christodoulos has in many occasions declared his support to "the 'right' of the Lord" while expecting to receive back support from the right conservative party on subjects such us the social demand for the separation of church and state authorities -an unsolved problem that no politician "touches" and has its roots back to the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires.
The identification between spiritual and temporal authorities, common practice during these Empires, inherited the Greek Orthodox Church with tremendous property in currency and real estate all around Greece.
This property develops bonds with the state authorities that effect the planning and targeting of the society. An example of this is the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs. Education and religion in Greece appear to be related and under the authority of the same Ministry. This, obviously, secures that the holiness of the wealth of the Greek Orthodox Church will be secured away from any doubts.
The artist created two A3 pages both containing the original newspaper page.

On page one the artist, to the end of the original title "Christodoulos 'sees' an organized plan..." adds the phrase "...of the church to build in forest lands that owns"
Many cases have been recorded in which church authorities attempt -and often succeed- to use land, such as forests, in order to develop real estate plans.

On page two the artist presents the original newspaper page under the title "The spiritual leader and the sweetness of temporal power".
The person authorized, for any reason, by the majority of the society to offer the hope of eternal life, the same time imposes, directly or indirectly, what one should vote at the state elections.

On the second day of his participation (ER 3rd) the artist attempts once more to create an art journal divided to four parts.

Part number one refers to a tabloid's attack (20070903) towards the theatrical performance directed by Deborah Warner of Samuel Beckett's "Happy Days". The performance is accused for being obscene and insulting to the ancient theater of Epidavros where the performance took place.
The tabloid's front page is added to a collage along with the rest of the tabloid that has taken the form of a penis.
Normality and abnormality appear here to be relevant values:

"The imposition of guilts to the consciousness of the society is the most successful mechanism for practicing authority.
The one who convinces the society that normality is abnormal becomes the absolute ruler of perversion and of the whole of society."
"Η επιβολή ενοχών στην συλλογική συνείδηση της κοινωνίας είναι ο πιο πετυχημένος μηχανισμός άσκησης εξουσίας.

Part number two presents a very common picture during the days that many areas in Greece faced total destruction by great fires: A person moans to the media for the disaster that stroke him (photo from Kathimerini 20070902).
The elections are only ten days away and it is a time for responsible thinking.

Ψηφίζω, όχι για κάποιο κοινωνικό όραμα αλλά για μικροαπολαβές και εξυπηρετήσεις.
Με την βοήθεια των κατάλληλων γνωριμιών διεκδικώ την ανέλιξή των οικείων μου σε δημόσιες θέσεις ενώ δεν πληρούν τις προϋποθέσεις και ενώ τα καθήκοντα που αναλαμβάνουν τους είναι αδιάφορα.

Part number three is a reference to the question "What is terrorism?".
Terrorism even if is not on every day's news is a matter of great importance since it is threatening human lives either as victims or as suspects for practicing terrorism.
The definition of terror though, appears to be totally relevant.

The artist here has developed the idea of presenting each day a person recorded in history as a great leader but also carrying the accusation of terrorist by the authorities of his period.
Vicky Nikolaou (Media Art Director) has created a TV-Cage in which a painting is placed representing Maximiliene Robespierre.

"ΤΟ ΓΚΟΥΑΝΤΑΝΑΜΟ ΣΥΝΙΣΤΑ ΕΠΙΚΑΙΡΟΤΗΤΑ;
Η συγκεκριμένη σύλληψη, δηλαδή το να παρουσιάζονται πρόσωπα που από τότε που πρωτοσυναντάται ο όρος τρομοκρατία (την περίοδο της Γαλλικής Επανάστασης) μέχρι και σήμερα έχουν χαρακτηριστεί ως τρομοκράτες, δεν έχει φυσικά ως αυτοσκοπό την ιστορική αναδρομή στο φαινόμενο αλλά το να θέσει έναν προβληματισμό, καίριο και εξαιρετικά επίκαιρο: τελικά, τι είναι τρομοκρατία;

Επικαιρότητα δεν συνιστούν μόνο γεγονότα – ενέργειες ανθρώπων ή ομάδων. Επικαιρότητα είναι και η φιλοσοφία που αναπτύσσεται γύρω από αυτά και η ορολογία που δημιουργείται για να τα χαρακτηρίζει και που φανερώνει τη νοοτροπία και την ηθική που διέπει συγκεκριμένες κοινωνικές ή πολιτικές ομάδες σε συγκεκριμένη εποχή.
Το Γκουαντάναμο για να συνιστά επικαιρότητα δεν χρειάζεται να προβάλλεται στις ειδήσεις κάθε μέρα.
Και ο σκοπός της τέχνης είναι να σχολιάζει την επικαιρότητα, όχι απλώς να την παρουσιάζει. Αλλιώς περιορίζεται στην δημοσιογραφία."

Part number four is a concept that the artist has developed along with Dimitri Christofis (Cartoon Designer).
The idea that death is always around us since death always balances life, is, by purpose or not, hidden to us. Thousands Watts every night, constant activities, the belief that we actually overrun nature make us never think of our mortality.
However, we are mortal, we will die at a time that we can not predict, and avoiding to think about this fact leads us to a life maybe totally superficial.
Dimitri Cristofis uses material from local press of the Swiss town he lives at, in order to create every day "the Daily Death Observer correnspondence":

Part number one presents the way Kostas Beveratos understands the authority of the curator and also uses this as an excuse to develop some ideas of his on the topic of authority and belief:
